For the longest, I thought I had considered myself a spiritual person, not religious at all. Even though I grew up hardcore to the bone Catholic, and even had been a seminarian for some time in my early years, I was only a ‘cultural’ Catholic more than anything else. For over two decades, I carried a sentiment of not needing to rely on attending church or being active member in order to continue being a good person, always trying my best to be morally and ethically appropriate. Early in 2021, something called me back to church and I started attending church again, every other Sunday, testing the waters of faith without knowing that the turbulence was in my soul.
I had worked for a Catholic church and assisted in starting a gift shop that turned out to be very successful for over a decade at St. Joseph Church, Hawthorne, CA. As life would have it, my previous supplier came up in my social feed one time near the end of 2021 and he told me, “I thought you would’ve followed your instinct and continue a gift shop after the new priest shut the store down and open your own.” I brushed off the comment and carried on conversing. He rephrased his statement, “I can help you start your own store. Find a location that you think will help the community and religious items may be needed.” I thought he was joking. But I enjoy researching and I found that there was only 1 shop in Long Beach, very limited hours to the public, rarely carried Spanish-speaking products, the closest place to buy an item was the swap meet or Downtown LA.
The merchandise would be there, but not some knowledge of the product and specially items that align with the Catholic faith and tradition. So, the research and offer took me into assessment of finances and possibilities to really create a unique space different than anything existent, close to the service I had offered for over ten years, but knowing that it is my very own. A name was born: Tiendita San Juditas (Little St. Jude Store). And now, it's hard to believe that three years ago in May of 2022, this little store opened its doors for the first time. And my heart overflows with immense gratitude as I reflect on how a vision, born from a place of a little fear and uncertainty, has blossomed into a thriving Catholic gift shop and a vibrant, diverse community. The proof is truly in these three sustained years!

In these past three years, we've had the immense privilege of serving both our local community and reaching across the entire USA, sending orders to 45 states! It's truly humbling to see how far the message of faith can travel. We've also seen our presence grow within local churches, and we feel so welcomed and embraced in this sacred space. I must admit that one of the most profound joys of these three years has been the opportunity to connect with so many incredible individuals. I've met people from all walks of life, each on their own unique spiritual journey. And in every single person, I witness a profound hunger for Christ and His message. It's in these interactions that I see the sacrifice of Jesus on the cross come to life, day after day. The power of the Holy Spirit is palpable, manifested through countless inspiring testimonies. Like myself, many are returning Catholics and plenty embracing faith once again. Now I know that when God calls, he will do it in unexpected ways. Perhaps clerical life was not for me, but as an active lay member of my parish, I can wholeheartedly admit that my vocation is in being of service to those who seek God, or simply need a meaningful gift that perpetuates tradition and culture.
There's a deep appreciation for sharing knowledge and catechizing, much like St. Jude, our patron saint. And our belief is firm: the faith must continue, and we are dedicated to helping it flourish. Sure, like in new business, we still face uncertainty and struggle during the slow seasons, but as long as faith remains in those who seek it and foment it, we will continue to have our doors open for as long as God sees it fit.
We've been indirect participants in the celebration of many sacraments over these three years, sharing in your most joyful and spiritual moments. For all of this, all we can say is a resounding THANK YOU, TO EACH AND EVERYONE OF YOU. Your unwavering support, your thoughtful referrals, and your kind reviews have been the cornerstone of our growth and success.
God bless you all!
